Upload a photo of a person and the painter draws a chibi concept sketch of them. Approve it, and about two minutes later the figure lands on the canvas — print it as-is or paint it first. Your first figure is free. Full walkthrough on the blog.

Draw straight lines, circles and squares onto the model

A new Shape tool. Drag a line, rectangle or circle straight onto your model in the active color — racing stripes, panel blocks, a ring around an eye. It cuts the surface fine enough that the edge stays crisp even on a low-poly mesh, and the shape sits there as a preview you can move, resize and reposition before you apply it. Nothing bakes in until you're happy.

Deleting a palette color asks first

Clicking the × on a swatch now confirms before it removes the color, so a mis-click can't wipe part of your paint job. And if you do delete one you were using, a single Ctrl+Z brings the color and the paint back.

Build a model from up to four photos, at the detail you choose

One photo means the AI has to invent the back and the sides. Give it up to four angles of the same object and it doesn't have to. There's also a Detail control now — models used to arrive at 30,000 triangles, and a color border can only be as sharp as the triangles it runs along. It's 200,000 by default, and you can drop it if your machine would rather have the speed.

Resize in the editor, and see the size you're actually printing

Scale the model where you're painting it, either by dragging a handle or by typing the dimension you want. Its real measurements sit in the corner while you work, in millimeters or inches, so the size stops being something you find out about in the slicer. Size moved into Setup, and the tools moved into a popout so the rail stays short.

Common questions.

Does this work with Bambu Studio and the Bambu AMS?
Yes. Export a Standard 3MF and drop it in. Bambu Studio's "Standard 3MF Color Parsing" dialog picks up the colors automatically — they map straight to AMS filament slots. The same file works on the AMS Lite, AMS 2 Pro, AMS HT, X1 Carbon, P1S, A1, and A1 mini, and in OrcaSlicer and PrusaSlicer too.
Does it support Prusa MMU3 and Anycubic ACE Pro / Creality CFS?
Yes. PrusaSlicer (MK4, MK4S, MK3S+, XL) reads the 3MF Materials Extension natively for MMU3 and MMU2S. Anycubic Slicer and Creality Print are OrcaSlicer-based and accept the same painted 3MF for ACE Pro and CFS multi-color printing.
How is this different from Bambu Studio's built-in paint tool?
Bambu Studio's paint tool is fine for quick fills, but it's locked to Bambu's slicer and lacks crease-aware regions, depth control, and a per-layer swap counter. Layerpaint is a focused STL painter — auto-partition by crease angle, Magic Fill that stops at edges, mirror painting, layer scrub, and a swap counter that helps you minimize purge waste before you slice.
Can I paint miniatures, terrain, and tabletop models?
Yes. The brush is sub-millimetre precise and the filament library includes Games Workshop paint references, so you can match Citadel/Vallejo schemes to filament colors. Great for D&D minis, terrain, busts, dioramas, and cosplay props.
How does AI Paint work?
Open your model, hit AI Paint, and add a reference photo, describe the colors you want ("weathered bronze, teal accents"), or do both — the photo leads and your words steer it. It paints the whole model to match, then hands the colors back fully editable, so you can tweak any part and export a Standard 3MF as usual. Your first AI generation is free, whether you spend it here or on AI Create.
How much does an AI paint cost? Does a bigger model cost more?
Each AI paint is one credit, flat — it costs the same whether the model is small and simple or huge and detailed. Your first is free, then credit packs are $4.75 for 5, $16.97 for 20 or $34.97 for 50. AI credits are their own thing, separate from export credits, so painting by hand is unaffected.
Can it make the model for me?
Yes — AI Create. Give it a photo or a written description and it generates the 3D shape, repaired and ready to paint. Your first AI generation is free, whether you spend it on a create or an AI paint; after that a create costs 2 credits from the same pack as AI Paint.
Can it turn a photo into a figure of me?
Yes — that's Chibi Figure. Upload a photo, and it draws a chibi concept sketch of the person; approve it and it builds the printable figure in about two minutes. The figure arrives in one color (the likeness is in the sculpt) — print it as-is on any printer, or paint it and print it in full color. Your first figure is free, then a concept is 1 credit and a build is 3, from the same packs as AI Paint. The photo is processed by a third-party AI service and we don't keep a copy; recognizable public figures are rejected by the safety filter and refunded.
Can I convert an image to STL?
Yes, end to end. AI Create turns a PNG or JPG — a photo, a logo, a drawing — into a real 3D model, not the flat relief a typical image-to-STL converter produces. Paint it (or don't), export a Standard 3MF, and if your workflow needs an STL file, the free model converter turns that 3MF into STL in your browser. Your first image-to-3D generation is free.
Do I need a multi-color printer?
For the painting to show up in plastic, yes — that's what the color 3MF is for. AI Create works on any printer: generate a model from a photo or a prompt, export it, and print it in a single color like any other file. If you add an AMS or MMU later, the same model is ready to paint.
What is a "Standard 3MF" and why does it matter?
3MF is the modern replacement for STL. The Materials Extension (<m:colorgroup>) lets a 3MF carry per-triangle colors that any compliant slicer can read without proprietary metadata. Layerpaint exports exactly this — so your colored model is portable across Bambu Studio, OrcaSlicer, PrusaSlicer, and Anycubic/Creality forks.
Is my model uploaded anywhere?
When you paint by hand, no — everything runs in your browser and your STL/OBJ/3MF never touches a server. Check the Network tab if you like. AI Paint is the one exception: it sends your model up to be painted and the result comes back to you. Prefer to keep everything local? Paint by hand.
How big a model can I paint?
Meshes up to several hundred thousand triangles work smoothly on a modern laptop. Larger models still work, just slower.
Can I save my work and come back?
Yes. Save to a .layerpaint project file (mesh + paint state, gzipped). Reload it any time, from any machine.
Do I need an account to try it?
No. The painter is free to use without signing up. To unlock export you just enter your email at checkout — no password to remember.
What if I want to use it on another machine?
Your license is tied to your purchase email, not the machine. On a new computer or browser, use the in-app contact bubble (bottom-right of the painter) or email ashley@layerpaint.app and we'll send your activation link — one click and that browser is unlocked too. No password to remember.
